Papers of William Scollay, 1807-1874 (inclusive), 1807-1813 (bulk).

Contains William Scollay correspondence, mostly with family members and friends, pertaining to his service in the British Army while the U.S. and Britain were at war in 1812; and to earlier travels to Montevideo during the British invasion of Buenos Aires, 1806-1807, and other areas of the world. Scollay was interested in transferring from the military to the civil branch of the East India Company during this period, and many of the letters concern attempts through family and friends to secure this appointment. Other papers include a journal of Scollay's and extracts about visits to Lisbon, Bombay and other places; manuscripts of his poems; correspondence belonging to his mother Catherine; copy of her will; an account of Scollay's life written in 1874; and miscellaneous documents.

Scollay (Harvard, A.B. 1804) left the U.S. for South America in 1806 intending to establish a mercantile house in Buenos Aires. At Montevideo he was appointed director and editor of the British Government press. After the British forces were defeated in Montevideo in 1807, he obtained a position in the British army of the East India Company and sailed with the fleet from England for Calcutta in 1811.
